The Japanese futon

Futon refers to a piece of furniture originating from Japan. It comprises of a traditional Japanese bedding system that has continued to impress the Americans since early 1970’s.  Although, many Japanese people are using beds to sleep rather the futons, futon spreads are still commonly used to sleep on the flood. Sometimes, small couches that can be turned into beds are also called futons; however, they are very different from traditional Japanese bedding system that comprises of the basic mattress known as shikibuton, comforters known as kakebuton, and pillow known as makura.

Shikibuton, or the mattress, is made extra comfortable by stuffing it with cotton batting and then wrapped with sheets in a wide range, known as shikifu. The cotton batting also allows the mattress to be folded easily and stored away. In Japan, there is a different type of futon for every season. For instance, during the summer Japanese uses light ones whereas heavy ones are used in the winters. The mattress is also made from down feathers which makes it very light and comfortable; however, these types are the most expensive. The comforter, or kakebuton, is covered with a specific kakebuton cover. Furthermore, the traditional Japanese pillow, also known as the makura, is typically filled with red beans or some buckwheat chaff.

This traditional Japanese bedding is specifically made in order to be stored away in a closet, known as oshiire, during the day. The oshiire closet is special closet with sliding doors and shelves. The futons are best stored in the upper shelf. Japanese homes are generally small, with a few rooms. For this reason, small rooms are typically used for dual purposes. Futon is a convenient choice of furniture for them. It is important to remember you dry your futon directly under the sunlight in order to prevent the molds from forming as well as to kill the dust mites, if present.
